Enhancing Poppy Place to feel more like home
We’ve been working hard to finalise the program of enhancements to our Memory Support Household, Poppy Place. With the final scope out for consultation with the Yackandandah Health Board, the Wellbeing Advocacy Yackandandah (WAY), and the Resident Community Group, we’re looking forward to bringing this project to life over the coming months.
Generous bequests from the estates of Maureen Cabrie and Beverley Skeen were the genesis for this uplift, and Apollo Care has contributed a further $150,000. In line with contemporary best practice for dementia-support environments, the project will create a household that helps residents continue to live their way, and supports independence, movement, choice and meaningful engagement.
Enhancements will include new painting, flooring and window coverings, historical artworks and other homely touches such as the addition of VJ panelling and new dimmable lighting.
The large lounge room will be converted into two smaller lounges separated by a new cosy, double-faced fireplace. The kitchen will be transformed to mirror a country-style domestic space, complete with an island bench and servery area. This kitchen has been designed to be safely used by residents living with advanced dementia care needs, providing them with a familiar and enabling space where they can feel at home.
The outdoor areas are also expecting a range of enhancements. The North Garden is being redesigned to offer a safe, accessible and welcoming outdoor environment for residents and families. Designed to be create a harmonious space that encourages outdoor use and movement to support relaxation and deliver physical and mental health benefits, it will include raised garden beds, sensory and cottage gardens, and outdoor seating. The South Garden will include new garden beds, new fencing and new outdoor furniture.
